Kentucky Bluegrass Maintenance Schedule for the Ohio River Valley

 

JANUARY

 

Relax by the fire the grass will wait!

 

FEBRUARY

 

Fertilize with a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer, i.e. 12-4-18, 20-5-10, etc. at a rate to yield 1 to 2 lbs. of Actual Nitrogen / 1000 sq. ft. Go with 2 # rate if extra growth is needed to overcome excessive turf wear or problems.

EARLY TO MID APRIL

Apply 1st application of Crabgrass Preventer. Most types work well. Many homeowner products are formulated with a light application of fertilizer. This works well for the spring application of Crabgrass Preventer.

Apply Broadleaf Weed Killer if and when weeds appear. For the occasional weeds spot treat with a hand pump sprayer.

MID MAY

Fertilize with with 1lb. / 1000 sq. ft. of 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer.

MID JUNE

Apply 2nd application of Crabgrass Preventer.

SUMMER

Deep watering with equivalency of 1" rain at least once a week. Since Bluegrass isn't especially susceptible to disease, watering in the evening is more beneficial.

MID AUGUST

Ideal seeding date. Seeding OK but less desirable until Mid-October. (see other sections of web-site for seeding information)

Best time of year to apply Grub Worm Control if needed.

MID SEPTEMBER

Fertilize 3-1-2 ratio at 1 lb. rate

Apply Broadleaf Weed Killer if needed.

MID OCTOBER

Fertilize 3-1-2 ratio at 1 lb. rate.

EARLY DECEMBER

Fertilize 3-1-2 ratio at 1 lb. rate.
