In theory, night watering encourages disease development. In theory this is true, but in real life the threat of lack of moisture to Bluegrass is more important than any obscure threat of disease. I recommend summer watering of Bluegrass in the early evening hours. You reap the benefits of the moisture all night, and it soaks in. Fescue is another story however! All Fescues are very susceptible to brown patch. A fungus disease that loves high temperatures, humidity, and succulent juicy plants. Brown patch manifests itself as round to oval, 18" to 24" pale yellow patches. Usually these patches will have a grey "smoke ring" until they turn brown and can be very unsightly. Usually the turf recovers when the temperatures drop in the fall. Cutting back on watering and fertilizing fescue in the hot days of mid July through August can help reduce the incidence of brown patch. Lawn chemical companies can treat the turf preventatively with 2 to 3 applications necessary for an entire summer.
