      Kentucky Bluegrass               Turf Type Fescue
Finer leaf than fescue Coarser than bluegrass but finer than KY 31 fescue
Fibrous root system spreads by rhizome & stolons & repairs damage Bunch root system, damage must be repaired by seeding
Requires 1" rain per week in summer to stay green Very drought tolerant
Relatively disease free Very susceptible to brown patch in summer
Susceptible to grub damage Relatively impervious to grubs
Overseeding not necessary Universities recommend overseeding yearly (at least every third year)
Optimal fertilization 4 to 5 times per year Optimum 2 to 3 times per year
Moderate growth rate - mow once per week Faster growth - 2 / wk peak
Price 12.5% less than fescue Cost more than KY bluegrass

Fescue often has plastic netting in it for additional strength. This is unacceptable for athletic fields. Cleats can catch netting and can cause injuries.

Please specify if netting is a problem.
